Haikyu!! vs. The Little Giant: Hinata Finally Meets His Ultimate Rival 🏐

If you thought Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle was enough emotional damage for one volleyball series, apparently not. Karasuno is heading back to the big screen, and this time Hinata Shoyo is about to meet someone who makes his whole “short guy who jumps ridiculously high” thing look slightly less unique.

Haikyu!! vs. The Little Giant is officially coming to Japanese cinemas in 2027, continuing Karasuno’s run at the Spring High tournament. Their next opponent is Kamomedai High — and standing on the other side of the net is Kōrai Hoshiumi, another undersized player with outrageous jumping ability and absolutely no respect for the idea that volleyball players are supposed to be tall.

Basically, Hinata has finally found his boss battle. 🏐

🏐 Hinata vs. Hoshiumi Is More Than Just Short Guy vs. Short Guy

From the beginning of Haikyu!!, Hinata’s entire volleyball obsession can be traced back to one player: Karasuno’s legendary “Little Giant.” He saw a smaller player dominating much taller opponents and immediately decided, “Yes, that looks reasonable. I shall also fly.”

Years later, Hinata arrives at the Spring High quarterfinals and meets Hoshiumi — a player who shares that same “Little Giant” image but is already much more polished technically. The official Haikyu!! announcement describes the upcoming movie as the long-awaited Hinata vs. Hoshiumi “Little Giant” showdown, with Karasuno facing Kamomedai in the quarterfinals.

And that’s what makes this matchup interesting.

Hoshiumi isn’t simply another opponent Hinata has to beat. In many ways, he’s what Hinata once imagined becoming: small, explosive, technically strong and perfectly capable of bullying people considerably taller than him.

Think of it as Hinata meeting the premium version of his own character build.

Slightly awkward.

🧱 Kamomedai Is Not Here to Make Karasuno Feel Good

Coming off the emotional chaos of The Dumpster Battle, where Karasuno finally faced longtime rivals Nekoma, the next match changes the mood completely. The official series site confirms that Karasuno has reached the Spring High quarterfinals, where Kamomedai awaits.

And Kamomedai isn’t exactly the sort of team that sees Hinata jumping around and politely lets him have his inspirational anime moment.

They’re disciplined, difficult to break down and built to put serious pressure on Karasuno. Add Hoshiumi into the mix and suddenly Hinata isn’t the only small player turning gravity into a personal suggestion.

That’s why VS. The Little Giant has the potential to feel very different from The Dumpster Battle. Nekoma was years of friendship, rivalry and unfinished business finally exploding onto the court.

Kamomedai feels more like a test.

Not “Can Karasuno beat an old rival?”

More like:

“Hinata, you wanted to become the Little Giant. Cool. Here’s another one. Good luck.”

And by “scientific,” we mean answering Haikyu!! questions and attempting to spike a virtual volleyball without embarrassing yourself.

Fail badly enough and don’t worry — every team needs someone to watch the bags.

🔥 There’s More Haikyu!! Coming Too

The movie isn’t the only new anime project on the way. A separate special anime, Haikyu!!: Where Monsters Go (Bakemono-tachi no Iku Tokoro), is also planned for 2027. It focuses on another Spring High quarterfinal happening around the same time: Fukurodani vs. Mujinazaka.

That means Bokuto fans aren’t being abandoned while Hinata and Hoshiumi fight over the Little Giant title.

Everyone gets volleyball-related emotional problems.

Production I.G is again handling the animation for Haikyu!! vs. The Little Giant, with Susumu Mitsunaka returning as director and screenwriter. The official movie site currently lists the film as a 2027 release, although an exact Japanese theatrical date has not yet been announced.

👑 So, Who Is the Real Little Giant?

That’s really the question hanging over this movie.

For years, “Little Giant” represented Hinata’s dream — proof that height didn’t have to decide how far someone could go in volleyball. But by the time he meets Hoshiumi, Hinata has grown far beyond being a kid trying to copy somebody he once saw on TV.

And maybe that’s the more interesting part of this match.

It’s not necessarily about proving Hinata is the better Little Giant.

It might be about whether he still needs to become one at all.
